Bathrooms & Pressurised Hot Water in Brampton, Haltwhistle & Tyne Valley (CA8 / NE49). Off the gas grid and in a stone house? Strong showers still work.

Between Brampton, Talkin, Lanercost and Haltwhistle, a lot of homes are farm steadings, barn conversions and stone cottages heated by oil or a heat pump. That changes which hot water cylinder you need, and a bathroom on a two-foot-thick outside wall needs lining before it's tiled.

01 — Off the gas grid

Oil boiler, heat pump or gas: the right cylinder for each.

An unvented cylinder gives you mains-pressure showers whatever heats the water. What changes is the cylinder inside, and who looks after the heating side.

Which unvented cylinder suits each heating system
Your heatingWhat we fit, and who does whatFitted from
Oil boilerSystem or regularA standard indirect unvented cylinder, usually 210L–250L. Mark fits the cylinder and connects the water side and zone valve. Any work on the oil boiler itself is done by an OFTEC-registered oil engineer.£1,890
Air-source heat pumpA heat-pump cylinder with an extra-large coil, because heat pumps heat water more gently. Usually 250L. Mark fits and safety-certifies the cylinder; the heat pump stays with the MCS installer who looks after it.£2,640
Mains gasBrampton townA standard indirect unvented cylinder. If the boiler needs swapping too, our partner Gas Safe heating engineer does the gas side on the same quote.£1,650
Solid fuel or back boilerCan't safely heat an unvented cylinder directly. We'll say so on the survey and suggest a booster pump or a different setup instead.Pump from £480

Before anything is ordered, Mark measures mains pressure and flow at your stopcock. Farm supplies at the end of a long pipe can be weak; with less than 1.5 bar and 20 litres a minute, a booster pump is the better answer, and he'll tell you so.

7 days · 8am–8pm

Leaks, burst pipes and cylinders with no hot water. The £95 leak diagnosis is the same price every day. Ring after 8pm and Mark calls you back from 8am.

One firm for the whole job. We handle all bathrooms, wetrooms, unvented hot-water cylinders (G3) and plumbing leaks in-house, and partner with our dedicated Gas Safe heating engineer whenever a job includes a boiler swap or gas pipework.

02 — Cold stone walls

A warm, dry bathroom on a two-foot stone wall.

In a steading or stone cottage, the bathroom is often on an outside wall. Tile straight onto it and the tiles stay cold, condensation runs down them and the grout goes black. So we line the wall first.

  1. Step 1

    Check the wall is dry

Old stone has to be able to dry out. We check for rising or penetrating damp first; if there's a problem with pointing or guttering, we'll tell you before anything is covered up.

  2. Step 2

    Line it with insulated boards

Insulated waterproof tile boards go on battens with a small ventilated gap behind, so the stone can still breathe while the room side stays warm.

  3. Step 3

    Seal the wet areas

The shower area is sealed with the Schlüter-KERDI waterproof layer and flood-tested for 24 hours, backed by a 10-year written no-leak warranty.

  4. Step 4

    Warm floor, then tiles

An electric underfloor heating mat under the porcelain takes the chill off stone-flagged or slab floors, on its own thermostat.

Lining an outside wall takes about 40–60mm off the room. Mark marks it out on the survey so you can see the finished size before you decide.

04 — Along the A69

From Brampton to Haltwhistle, and the farms in between.

Brampton is about 18 minutes from our Kingstown base and Haltwhistle about 35, straight along the A69. Haltwhistle sits over the county line in Northumberland, but it's on the same road and gets exactly the same prices and the same 7-day leak and cylinder call-outs.

Many farmhouses up here are at the end of long supply pipes, and some are on private water. Mark checks pressure, flow and water quality on the survey before recommending a cylinder.

05 — Questions

Brampton & Tyne Valley questions.

Something else? Call Mark on 01228 587 745.

We have no mains gas. Can we still have mains-pressure showers?

Yes. An unvented cylinder runs off your mains water, not your gas. It's heated by your oil boiler or heat pump, so with enough mains pressure and flow you get strong showers just the same.

Will a heat pump give us enough hot water?

It will with the right cylinder. Heat pumps heat water more gently, so we fit a heat-pump cylinder with an extra-large coil, usually one size bigger than you'd have with a boiler.

Who services the oil boiler?

An OFTEC-registered oil engineer. We look after the cylinder and its yearly £95 safety service; if you need an oil engineer, we can put you in touch with one we work alongside.

Is Haltwhistle really in your area?

Yes. It's in Northumberland (NE49), but it's 35 minutes along the A69 and gets the same prices and 7-day leak and cylinder call-outs as Brampton.

Our bathroom's outside wall is damp. Can you tile it?

Not until the damp is sorted. We'll check on the survey and tell you whether it's pointing, guttering or ground level. Once the wall is dry, we line it with insulated boards on a ventilated gap before tiling.

When can I reach you?
