Bathrooms, Wetrooms & Unvented Cylinders in Penrith & Eden Valley (CA11). For red-sandstone terraces with weak showers, and villages on their own water.
From the terraces off Brunswick Road and Castletown to farmhouses in Lazonby, Langwathby, Kirkoswald and Shap, Penrith-area bathrooms tend to have the same two problems: a shower fed by a tank in the loft that barely trickles, and, out in the villages, water that needs cleaning up before it reaches a new valve or cylinder.
Why showers in older Penrith houses are so weak, and the fix.
Most of Penrith's 19th-century red-sandstone terraces were plumbed with a cold-water tank in the loft feeding a copper cylinder in an airing cupboard. The shower only gets the pressure made by the height of that tank, which on a two-storey terrace is often around 0.2 bar: enough to fill a bath, not enough to rinse your hair.
The usual answer is an unvented cylinder that runs straight off the mains, so every shower in the house gets full mains pressure and the loft tank goes. Before recommending one, Mark measures the pressure and flow at your stopcock, because some older terraces still have a narrow lead or old iron supply pipe that needs upgrading first. If the main can't support a cylinder, a booster pump is the better answer, and he'll tell you so.
The thick sandstone walls also matter. Pipe runs are planned around them rather than chased through them, and outside walls are lined with waterproof boards before tiling so a bathroom on a cold gable end stays dry.

02 — What we find in CA11
What we usually find, and what we fit instead.
What we usually find
Penrith terraces & town-edge houses
A loft tank feeding the shower at a trickle, often with a noisy pump added years ago
Small original bathrooms with a bath taking up half the floor
Tiles fixed straight to plasterboard around the shower, starting to soften
A cold outside wall where condensation runs down the tiles
What we fit
Strong showers and dry walls
A 170L–250L unvented cylinder for full mains pressure at every shower, after a free flow test
A walk-in shower or level wetroom that wins back floor space
Waterproof boards and a sealed waterproof layer, backed by a 10-year written no-leak warranty
Waterproof lining boards on the outside wall before tiling
03 — Eden Valley villages
On a private water supply? Clean water first, then the new bathroom.
In Penrith itself, scale is rarely the problem: pressure is. Out in the villages it's often the other way round.
Borehole and spring supplies
Many farmhouses and cottages around Lazonby, Langwathby, Kirkoswald and Shap draw water from their own borehole or spring. Depending on the ground, that water can be hard and scaly (the limestone around Shap is a common cause), gritty after heavy rain, or peaty and brown.
Grit and scale wreck thermostatic shower cartridges and block the strainers on unvented cylinders, so before anything new goes in we fit what your supply needs:
A sediment filter to catch grit and sand
A scale reducer ahead of the cylinder and shower valves
A UV unit where your supply needs one, fitted to the maker's instructions
Filtration for a typical private supply, fitted alongside a new bathroom or cylinder: from £480.
Private supplies also need enough pressure for an unvented cylinder. Mark checks the pump set and pressure vessel on the survey; if it can't give at least 1.5 bar and 20 litres a minute, he'll suggest a pump upgrade or a different hot water setup rather than fit something that won't perform.
We fit and maintain the equipment. Testing of drinking-water quality on private supplies is done by Westmorland and Furness Council or an accredited lab.

Is there a travel charge for Penrith or the villages?
No. Prices are the same in CA10 and CA11 as in Carlisle. Penrith is about 25 minutes from our Kingstown base via the M6; Shap is a little further.
Our shower is weak. Do we need a cylinder or a pump?
It depends on your mains. Mark measures pressure and flow at the stopcock on the free survey. With at least 1.5 bar and 20 litres a minute, an unvented cylinder gives every shower full pressure. Below that, a Stuart Turner booster pump, from £480, is the better answer.
We're on a private supply. Can we still have an unvented cylinder?
Often, yes, if your pump set and pressure vessel can deliver enough pressure and flow. We'll check on the survey and fit filtration first, so grit and scale don't block the cylinder's strainer or shorten its life.
Can you work on a listed or very old sandstone house?
Yes. We plan pipe runs around thick walls rather than through them, and for listed buildings we'll work to whatever your conservation officer has agreed.
Can you do the boiler as well?
We handle all bathrooms, wetrooms, unvented hot-water cylinders (G3) and plumbing leaks in-house, and partner with our dedicated Gas Safe heating engineer whenever a job includes a boiler swap or gas pipework.
